B-Jada & LO. – ’82 To ’94 (Mixtape)

I highly advise you to pay close attention to LO. and the work he’s doing. On LO. and B-Jada’s latest collaborative mixtape they prove that the Bay Area is still a hot spot for up and coming rap talent. The project, which represents Jada and LO.’s years of birth, can be described as an authentic old school hip hop sound. With a wide array of marvelously sampled beats, these emcees along with other members of their Geek Squad Music Group spit with a sense of lyrical purpose.

An NYC-based duo that joined the rap game in ’96, dead prez has released rap that always stands behind the group’s position against government control of the media with lyrics and content rooted in political opinions. Formed by M-1 and stic.man, dead prez first dropped tracks for movie soundtracks and didn’t release its first album until the new millenium. The duo’s first album Let’s Get Free (2000) presents listeners with a clear view of dead prez’s perhaps controversial stances on a variety of topics. ”Hip-Hop” clearly conveys dead prez’s ideas about the music industry while showcasing some of the emcees’ quality flow.

The Black Hippy collective, made up of Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul represent honest and meaningful street hip hop. After the success of Kendrick’s Section.80 and Schoolboy’s Habits and Contradictions, it’s Soul’s turn to prove his depth and skills. Unlike the others, he’s from the suburbs rather than the ‘hood’ but instead of faking it, he remains true to his own story. He flies much lower under the radar compared to his label mates, but his quality is just as great. His strongest records, “Illuminate”, “SOPA” and “Terrorist Threat” send important messages. Listen carefully, it make take you a couple listens to truly enjoy his music.

Brenton Duvall lets loose another dope remix. This time around he meshes The Knock’s and Kardinal Official’s hit “All We Got” and indie rock group One Room. It’s great to hear him making sick remakes of popular music, but it’d be a pleasure to start seeing him produce more original rap songs, as he’s super skilled in that arena as well.

E-40 was the man back when the Hyphy movement was exploding in Northern California, but since then he’s lost the swagger he once had. Kendrick’s been all over the place recently, with a number of features in the past week. From 40′s The BLock Brochure: Welcome To the Soil album, “Catch A Fade” includes a pretty tight beat and a nice verse from Lamar, but not too much other than that.

The Los Angeles native dropped the creative visual for his newest single from his upcoming debut album My Name Is Shawn coming in the fall. He eloquently reflects on the pride, trust and loyalty he has in his group of friends, a sentiment we can all relate to.

The emcee representing Austin, Texas is in the midst of breaking through, after the release of his latest project, The Coldplay Sessions, a complete mixtape of Coldplay samples. The rapper/producer/singer released his 3rd visual from the tape today. In “No Thing”, a sample of Coldplay’s “Yes”, he questions the success of untalented artists in the music industry.
